A Water Meditation

Sit or lie comfortably in a favourite spot. Close your eyes. Ground and center. Acknowledge your personal guardians and gods, and project a circle around you. Breathe deeply and steadily.
You are standing ankle-deep in the water at the edge of a lake. The water is cool, and the day is warm with the last shreds of summer, for autumn has barely begun. You wade deeper, letting the cool, refreshing water caress your warm skin as you walk. Soon, the water is up to your neck. You bend your knees a little, so that the water’s surface is as close to eye-level as possible. You notice how the water sparkles from the sun’s reflection, dancing crystals of light on the surface.

You realize how like the water you are, how your emotions flow, how the joys in your life can bring tears to your eyes, just as much as the sorrows. You can see clear to the bottom of the lake - the weeds and stones, the shells and pearls… You look again, and see a chalice, a cauldron, a sea biscuit, a starfish… other assorted symbols and tools of water as you deepen into trance. You find that you can breathe underwater. You dive deeper, to better examine the treasures at the bottom, and you see a shape formed by the rocks below: the shape of a woman’s body. The Goddess, you think to yourself, earth and water, and dive closer to feel the shape of the rock form. As your hand touches the smooth surface, you understand that this form is here to teach you about your inner feminine energy, and that it is time to learn about and honour your own emotions.

You touch the place where her heart would be, and feel a flutter in your own heart. Suddenly, you become aware that the water… is flowing… through you. You look down at your body, and realize you are indeed made of water. With this thought, you find that you can be any form of water you choose, whether you’re a river or a tsunami. You take your time and become one with water energy, enjoying the sensation of water flowing through and with you. Remember, too, that water governs our emotions, so allow yourself time to honour them fully, for whatever they are… Flow and rush as you will with the floods of the river or tides of the ocean… As water around you goes rushing toward land, you spread out your arms and gently float back to shore.
